Talk the talk

  • blog: website where an individual or a group regularly generates new content, be it text, images, audio or video. Short for ‘weblog’.
  • to blog: to update one’s blog.
  • post: can be used as a verb or a noun. To post is to write an individual entry on a blog; as a noun, it refers to an individual entry.
  • blogger: person who engages in the act of blogging.
  • blogosphere: collective term for the worldwide community of blogs.
  • blogroll: list of links to other people’s blogs that the blog owner likes reading.
  • BlogChalk: a way of indexing a blog so that it can be closely identified with blogs close geographically or interest-wise.
  • permalinks: permanent URLs that allow bloggers to link to specific blog entries.
  • trackback/pings: a tool that blogging software uses to track external references to blog posts.
  • comments: a function which allows blog readers to respond to blog posts.
  • RSS: stands for Really Simple Syndication. RSS technology allows a blog to be syndicated so that its readers can track updates using an RSS reader or aggregator. RSS programs can be run on your local hard drive or be accessed online from anywhere in the world. Feeds can also be accessed through mobile phones using the appropriate software.
  • blogathon: where people commit to blogging for a length period of time to raise money for a particular cause—for example, Hurricane Katrina disaster relief.
  • Bloggies: awards for ‘Weblog of the Year’. Anyone can cast their vote. (NB: For a time there were the Evangelical Blog Awards.)
